Introduction to Rock Climbing & Classic Welsh Rock This course is aimed at folk who want 5 days rock climbing in the Highlands. It can act as an introduction to rock climbing outside and for folk who have some indoor wall experience and want to sample the more adventurous delights of life on the rock. The first two days will be spent training and climbing on the superb valley crags followed by outings to some of the classic mountain routes in Glen Coe, Ben Nevis and Binnein Shauss. The emphasis of this course will be to do lots of good rock climbing and teach sound, simple rope techniques which can be practiced, consolidated and refined during the course. Course Pre-requirements: A basic level of fitness and flexibility and a desire to improve your rock climbing skills, rope work and visit some of Snowdonia's classic rock climbs, from Diff to VS. Sample Itinerary: Day 1: Introduction to single pitch climbing - Skills covered: Rock climbing techniques, tying on to the rope, belaying from below and above, tying on to anchors, abseiling. Day 2: Introduction to Multi-Pitch climbing - Skills covered: Multi pitch climbing including setting up anchors, running belays, stance management and possibly retreating off a climb. Day 3: Mountain Multi-Pitch Day: A weather dependent day aiming to cover as much rock as possible in a mountain setting - lots of climbing and mountaineering and not too much talking about it! Day 4: Multi Pitch Improvement day: A day to consolidate and refine the techniques taught so far at a new venue, possibly on harder routes. Preparation for lead climbing tomorrow if appropriate. Day 5: Lead Climbing or Sea Cliff Climbing: A 'clients choice' day. If it's appropriate (*see notes below) students may wish to lead some of their own climbs under close supervision from their instructor. Otherwise the last day may be a good opportunity to sample the delights of sea cliff climbing. *Students Leading: Before any students lead climb on a course they must be able to demonstrate all the required skills, discussed during the course, and both understand the extra risks involved and be willing to accept them. Further Reading: Rock Climbing: Essential Skills & Techniques (Libby Peter, MLTUK). Very recent rock climbing instructional manual. Clear, concise and recommended.
